Attu Carbonatite REE

The Attu carbonatite is an early-stage REE–Sr–Ba dyke with exceptional reported specimen grades. It is a scientific discovery still at grassroots stage: no drilling, no defined size, no metallurgical test work and no Mineral Resource.

Overview

The Attu Carbonatite is an early-stage REE–Sr–Ba exploration target on Uperniviarsuk island, approximately 10 kilometres northeast of Attu village. Reported rock samples contain up to 12.4% TREO, 14.6% SrO and 12.4% BaO, together with primary rare-earth minerals including monazite, daqingshanite and burbankite.

These are individual specimen results and do not represent the average grade of a deposit. The carbonatite dyke is narrow and its size, continuity and internal grade distribution remain unknown. Although its primary mineralogy warrants further investigation, it does not demonstrate simple, economic or environmentally benign processing.

The project remains at grassroots exploration stage, with no drilling, metallurgical test work, Mineral Resource or Mineral Reserve. Mineral tenure also requires confirmation. Detailed mapping, channel sampling, mineralogical analysis and staged exploration are needed to determine whether the occurrence has meaningful scale and continuity.

Primary magmatic hosts can be favourable compared with deposits that rely on a weathering blanket. Favourable mineralogy is a hypothesis to test, not proof of easy, economic or environmentally benign processing.

Status

No drilling. Unknown size and continuity. Potential for additional dykes is conceptual. Mineral tenure over the occurrence is identified in the technical overview as unconfirmed by the authors and is not asserted here.

Geological setting

The dyke is reported at the southern end of Uperniviarsuk island, about 10 km north-east of Attu village. It is a Mesoproterozoic (about 1.5 Ga) carbonatite, younger than the Nagssugtoqidian orogen that hosts the district. A separate, older allanite-bearing pegmatite occurrence at Attu is catalogued by GEUS as an “indication” only and is not the basis of this page.

Outstanding work

A responsible first-pass programme would confirm tenure, then map, channel-sample true widths, and characterise mineralogy and any processing implications. Until that work exists, Attu Carbonatite should be read as a high-grade, high-uncertainty exploration target.
